10 Things To Do With Your Hands (When You're Not Holding A Drink)

1. Pockets

This may seem obvious, but ladies, keep this in mind when getting dressed. Woman's clothing doesn't always accommodate for a person to put their hands in their pockets so this is something to be mindful of.

2. Phone

Now I wouldn't recommend this for a very long period of time because you are technically trying to socialize. BUT, any type of line up, while waiting at the bar with your friends, trying to get someone annoying to leave you alone. Ya know the normal stuff.

3. Dance

When I first decided to try going out without drinking I was terrified. I was terrified because I knew how much I LOVED to dance (says every girl in the world) and I knew I wasn't confident enough to do it without a substance. Well after a lot of practice and after a lot of inner self work. I can now proudly say I can be first on the dance floor and last to leave without the use of anything. While everything except my antidepressants, antianxiety and mood balancer pills (lol eye roll)

4. Go to the bathroom

I don't know about all of you, but I am hellllaaa empathetic and that means I can get overwhelmed super easily. ESPECIALLY if i'm not on the "same level" as everyone else is.

In my experience frequent bathroom breaks are a must and if anyone bothers you about it just yell "I HAVE A BLADDER INFECTION" and run away. They'll probably be more embarrassed then you...right?

5. Hold your friend/partners hand

Lol after reading this I really wanted to put an "s" at the end of hands. I just kept envisioning two sober people holding both hands trying to navigate through a dance floor of drunk people hahha. ANYWAYS. If you're feeling overwhelmed human contact can help a ton, especially on the body part you're trying to distract.

6. Bring a prop or two

(Fans, glow sticks, sparklers... lol k the props I just listed make me sound like i'm going to a 5 year olds birthday party).

This one is huge for me. I have such a hard time sitting still normally so when I'm trying to break a habit I get EXTRA fidgety. Fans are my go to mostly because they keep you cool and you look fancy while you're at it!

7. Hold your friends jackets

Hahah okay this doesn't sound ideal at all but it came to my mind and so I thought I better write it down. Like was this a suppressed personal experience I forgot about??

8. Get an alcohol-free bevy

A big lesson I have learned is that you can't count on or expect people to accommodate your N/A needs. Yes sometimes you can get lucky and someone will have tea or juice or whatever. But most of the time people bring beers to BBQs and beers to patio parties. Hopefully it won't ALWAYS be like this, but for now we need to lead by example.

9. Dance with someone

Seriously, what better way to distract your body, mind and soul than getting all Havana Nights on us!

10. Relax, everyones drunk, no one can tell you're uncomfortable

Honestly how many times have you met someone out at night and not remembered them. Or all those incredible heart to hearts or business plans you've mapped out. No one is going to notice what you're doing with your hands.

Unless of course you mention that you don't know what to do with your hands. Then you'll become the laughing stalk of the night and everyone will keep pointing them out. Yes this is a true story lol.
